Actually, Shoshanna, I have read several articles suggesting that the Yam
Suph is a mythical metaphore for death, and the Israelites' rescue a kind of
re-birth, reflected in the cosmic struggle between YHWH/Baal and Yamm.
Unfortunately, I don't have the reference, but it was probably in JBL, VT,
JSOT or some such journal from about 3 years ago.

Interesting. I looked it up today, and found that in the entire chapter describing the event, unless I missed something, the Torah only uses the word "sea" with no name, and only in Moshe's song, the following chapter, is Yam Suf used. Rashi says nothing about it, I'm going to look in Mikraot Gedolot, and let you know if anyone says anything about it.
