On a lighter note: The traditional Jewish explanation is that "dag" and
"dagah" indeed refer to two different fish, one male and one female.
Presumably
the male vomited Yonah out and the female then swallowed him. The exigetical
point is that Yonah was too morose in the belly of the first fish to do
anything about escaping, but in the female fish he noticed her eggs and was
inspired
by this sign of new life to call out in prayer, which was indeed answered.
