Keil & Delitzsch suggest "celestial being," It matters not what these
suggest the word elohim means.
A clear meaning of the word throughour Scripture indicate 1/ Moses was
called Elohim, 2/ The rulers of Israel were called Elohim, The gods made of
wood and stone were called elohim. Others in the future will be called
Elohim of Israel. The God of Israel was called an Eloah singular Elohim.
Concerning the belief of the Hebrews in Spirits and immortal souls, this
was not held by the Hebrews in early times. It did however become part of
their belief system by some after the captivity.
The incident with Saul and the witch of endour was very much a happening
that was a put on by the woman, Saul did not see any thing, Saul stood head
and shoulders above every man in the land, she knew who he was just as she
knew who he wanted to be 'brought forth' she conjured up a myth.
The use of the word nephesh does not have to refer to a spirit it has any
varied meanings and know where does the OT or the New infer an immortal
soul. It is really all to the contrary.
The OT does divide breathe from body.
