- Subject: simultaneity and BH aspect...?
- Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 15:04:00 -0500 (EST)
having fun with narrative course, NMC 1304. among topics today was the
encoding of simultaneity, the juxtaposition of clauses to indicate
temporal relations.
assumption. overlapping, one event happens (perfective/foreground) while
another event under way (imperfective/background). how does hebrew do
this?
representative ex. 1K 14:17 hi va'ah bsaf habbayit, wena`ar met
in all cases, we seem to find (1) verbless clause (2) haya clause=1 (3)
participle w/wout haya.
question: is this in fact the correct generalization? if so..., what does
that say about hebrew "grammatical aspect"?
what do you think...? could you find a real yiqtol in an imperfective
context here? i'm guessing not, based on my anecdotal sense... looks like
a good MA topic. ;-)
