Ullendorf's article highlights the distinction between the system of a
language,
"the langue", that exists as an abstract concept and/or as the competence
in a speaker's head
and "the parole", the use and explicit implementations of the language.
Biblical Hebrew is merely a mosaic of the language that existed. The
biggest question of all is how to penetrate that mosaic. What does it mean
to know BH? Many of the holes and inherent/implicit connections start to
reveal themselves when one starts to use such a language. There is a
multidimensionality in a language that starts to become visible/felt when
the likes of Ullendorf question BH as a language. So will reseachers
attempt to climb inside or stand outside and gawk at the holes?
