dear b-haverim,
looking at the distribution of variants of the first person sequentials.
you get two types of variation.
(type I) W)HYH --> W)HY merger of final-weak paradigm
(type II) W)KTB --> W)KTBH merger of modal paradigm
curious if you look at the distributional pattern. looks confusing;
however, you can make sense of the distribution if you notice the
ambiguity of the -H in type I. what do you think of the following
scenario?
Early Persian Qumran
W)HYH --> W)HY --> W)HYH
--> W)KTBH
my idea is that when the the final -H "comes back" as it were in the
final-weak paradigm, it is actually part of a different, larger
phenomenon. of course, this would mean that the scribes misunderstood some
forms.
i'm intensely interested in the transitional periods where you seem to
obtain free variation: there ought to be principles governing choices, a
la Revell.
