This is a combination of an answer to this survey and a (freely given)
advertisement. I learned Hebrew several years ago on an SIL course
taught by John Dobson based on drafts of this book. I assume that SIL
as "my institution" is now using this book which it has published,
though I am not personally involved in teaching Hebrew. Also I have
not seen the published edition. But I can recommend John Dobson's
method as giving to students the confidence that they can read the
text from the beginning, without getting them bogged down in
technicalities.

From SIL "Notes on Translation" vol. 13 no.3 1999 p.60:

NEW BOOK

LEARN BIBLICAL HEBREW

by John H. Dobson

Learn Biblical Hebrew is designed to enable you to read biblical
Hebrew, understand its structure, and build a basic vocabulary by
reading words in meaningful passages and using them in games and
activities. Because Hebrew is very different from English, it cannot
be confined by English grammatical terms. An innovative teaching
approach helps users gain ability in reading Hebrew as quickly as
possible. Learn Biblical Hebrew is a 8 1/2 x 11 book of 310 pages and
is priced at $33.50.

The book follows the approach that was used in the popular text book
Learn New Testament Greek, also by John Dobson. A French translation
of Learn New Testament Greek is in its final stages of preparation.

I would be very interested to know what textbook(s) you (or your
institution) use(a) to teach first year Hebrew (if you teach it) and
whether any further instruction in Hebrew syntax/exegesis is
offered/required by your institution. If you are a current or recent
student in such a course your input would be appreciated as well. I will be
happy to furnish you the results of my survey. Thanks.
