I concur with the recommendations of Ian and Niels on books. Perhaps a
simpler introduction for you might be to consult several articles in the
Anchor Dictionary of the Bible, a six volume set surely owned in your
university library. I would especially note the following:

HISTORIOGRAPHY (the recounting of the past):
Kirk Grayson, Thomas Thompson and Donald Lateiner each offer invaluable
surveys and very suggestive bibliography for continued study (ABD III,
205-218).
CHRONOLOGY
Hebrew Bible ( Mordechai Cogan) and New Testament (Karl Donfried) and both
excellent.

Then you might also want to read the general articles about Israel, Assyria,
Mesopotamia, Egypt, etc., not only for the basic information they contain
but also for bibliographic references in each area.

This is something I assign to university students who are beginning to study
Bible. Certainly not the final assignment you should set for yourself, but
perhaps a feasible first step.

Best of Luck
