According to Kenneth Kitchen (article "Brick-kiln" in "New Bible
Dictionary", this furnace "was very likely a brick-kiln, one of those
that must have supplied burnt bricks to Nebuchadrezzar's Babylon. The
word used, 'attun, 'furnace', is probably identical with the
Assyro-Babylonian word utunum, 'furnace, kiln'."

this is, properly speaking, an aramaic quetion- but you folks know all that
stuff too--

the aramaic word 'attun, translated "furnace" here- does it specifically
mean "kiln" or "oven"? what i am wondering is if the story portrays the 3
hebrews being tossed into a brick kiln or a bread oven.

my sense is that it is a kiln. but i dont wanna go shootin off my mouth
without knowing aforehand.

thanks,

Jim
