Dear List members,
Alviero Niccacci ask me to provide additional support for my view that the Moses and the Levites brought with them an Egyptian idea of God to the Hebrew Yahwists. I have determined that the following texts best represent the teachings and traditions of these original Levites no longer known by his original name, but now known not as Ptah-mose but spoken in Hebrew as Moshe. The Levites did not remain aloof to Hebrew Yahwism. To the contrary, the following examples show that this was a new Becoming. The Levites found this manistation of special Becoming in Hebrew Yahwism and became both converts and leaders. Here are the four earliest traditions I ascribe to them: 1) Name: "I am Becoming what I am Becoming." 2) Miriam's Chanting Song extracted from Ex 15:3ff. Of Yahweh I sing, he has covered himself in glory. Horse and rider he has thrown into the sea. The chariots and army of Pharaoh he hurled into the sea. His choice horses were drowned in the Sea of Reeds. The depths closed over them. They sunk to the bottom like a stone. A blast from your nostrils and the waters piled high; the waves stood upright like a dike. The enemy said, "I will give chase. I will overtake. I shall draw my sword. my hand will destroy them. I will divide the spoil, my desire will feast on it." One breath of yours your blew, and the sea closed over them; they sank like lead into the terrible waters. You stretched forth your right hand; the earth swallowed them up. [Of Yahweh I sing: he has covered himself in glory. Horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.] 3) A "Blessing" from the early post-conquest era that recalls the origins and circumstances of the Levites becoming priests. You granted to Levi your Urim, your Thummim to the one your favored, after you tested him at Massah, and striven with him at the waters of Meribah. He says of his father and mother, "I have not seen them." His brothers he no longer knows, nor does he know his children. Yes, they kept your word, and held firmly to your covenant. 4) Commandments regarding the Levitical cult. I. You shall not have any gods but me. II. You shall not make for yourself an engraved image. III. You shall not speak vanity against IV. You shall not disregard the the Name of Yahweh. Sabbath. I do not wish to offer any interpretative comments but rather leave texts on the table for anyone to comment on as they wish. Thank you. Lloyd Barre Lloyd M.
