Please, Dave and everyone, note that the quotation below was taken
from an E-mail beginning "Dear John" and in reply to John Ronning not
to Dave Washburn. The hypothetical assertion that "that no words or
grammatical forms mean anything at all, everything was pragmatics" was
not intended to represent anyone in particular's views, certainly not
Dave's.

And please take note of such marks as ;-( as not entirely serious. I
recognise that English is a worldwide language and no-one from any one
country or social and educational stratum can dictate what is correct.
My serious point was that there is clearly no worldwide agreement over
the acceptability of Dave's "I forgot my checkbook" example.

I don't know why you keep making such statements as "no words
or grammatical forms mean anything at all, everything was
pragmatics." I would hope to have shown you by now that this is
NOT my view. I would sincerely appreciate it if you would refrain
from misrepresenting me like this from now on.
