I use mostly Rolf Rendtorff : The Old Testament. An introduction.
Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1986.

The book is divided in three parts:
the Old Testament as a source of the history of Israel ;
the literature of the O.T. in the life of Ancient Israel - or more precisely
as an expression of this life ;
the books of the O.T. with emphasis on structure, composition and
purpose of the final form.

It is a good working tool, featuring key words in the margin and a
system of references. Bibliography at the end of each section.
