It's been a couple of weeks, so I just wanted to restart this
discussion. Based on what I understood, we're keeping hosting at CC,
with an eye towards moving to WMF servers in fall. Is that right?

Yes, this is correct.

Sorry, I've been super busy and now I'm at a conference all week.

Hi folks,

Again, sorry for the delay. Here is a roundup of my thoughts. This ties together several e-mails, which I won't quote individually.

* Regarding staying on CC hosting indefinitely until WMF is ready to accept us: I'm still worried about the quality of this hosting. While I definitely appreciate the quick action on the two problems I identified (SMW version and clock error), these are not the kinds of problems that we should be relying on end users to find and report. Rather, this stuff should be simply taken care of by the host. The fact that it's not makes me worry about what other, less obvious, hosting problems may exist.

Similarly, based on discussions with Mako Hill and on these mailing lists, my impression was that SMW hosting is not a service that CC usually does; rather, it's a courtesy extended because AcaWiki needed a host and there wasn't an obvious better option at the time. Therefore, the level of staff attention would be lower and there would be less experience available. Also based on the same sources, my impression was that CC would prefer us to move hosting elsewhere.

My belief is that moving to a dedicated SMW host would eliminate these issues.

I would feel less strongly if the plan to move to WMF were more solid. But, at this point, the plan appears to be along the lines of "restart these conversations mid-August" - which does not offer a specific timeline nor a guarantee that anything will actually happen. Plans and priorities change at any organization, including WMF, and they might wish to set criteria for us which would take time for us to achieve. (CC'ing Erik Moeller in case I've mischaracterized the situation.)

* Regarding my plans for import/export: I don't believe I need any access beyond MediaWiki's API, so nothing needed on this front I believe.

* Where should bugs be reported? There's been references to Bugzilla in this thread, and Jodi has a Bugzilla link on her user page. There is another bug system which I've seen that has many items not reflected in Bugzilla (something hosted by CC?). There's nothing in the AcaWiki FAQ, though. Can someone who knows add an entry with links?

Thanks again for all the help and interest. While we still have some differences, it is pretty clear to me that our goals are congruent.

Reid

p.s. Would it be possible to change the default setting of "Avoid duplicate copies of messages?" on this mailing list to Off? Whenever I run into this on any Mailman list, I find it quite baffling, for two reasons. First, I get the copy sent to me directly and not through the list, so it doesn't get filtered into the list folder. Second, because nothing appears with the list subject tag and/or in the list folder, I assume the message hasn't gone to the list, which is confusing. I've fixed it for myself but I'm sure others are similarly confused.

However, I speak for myself only, not the company.
