Toby--

Your observations are so sensible you're scary as hell.

I wish we had you at the hearings to fight the re-routing of Route 70 past
Havelock, NC. This road gets busy at morning and evening rush, so our highway
department intends to cut down a staggering amount of acreage of our coastal
longleaf pine forest-- of which they're not making any more-- to build a
bypass.

No matter that the problem could be solved by staggering the hours of the
main local users, a couple of adjacent Air Force bases. That would be too
much
trouble, and no heavy equipment could be used implementing sich a solution.
However, the highway folks announce blithely that they are willing to offset
the
loss by the creation of some habitat elsewhere. This normally means taking
some
fields they already own and plowing them up so they become waterlogged--
thus, instant wetlands behind the WalMart lot.

The invasive species par excellence? It's us.

M. Elvin
