Look at this picture of a victory garden in 1917, black and white, but
still an early example of an edible landscape. the photo is for an
online edition of a book written after WW I by the organizer of the
National War Garden Commission, which discusses how they got more than
5 million gardens started during the war in urban areas.

and is an interesting read. The chapters talk about e g their
shortages of fuel for transport caused by the needs of military
mobilization, and how practical it was to get people to grow their own
food in cities because of the tremendous savings in energy.
