Bailey’s candy boards have about 10 lb of sugar and 3 lb of AP23 pollen substitute as well as a shot of Honey-B-Healthy (10 frame). I would not put them on yet as they are an expensive source of carbs. Stick with your standard feeder until it gets cold enough for the bees to start clustering. Then the candy boards prove their worth.

I am just a novice but I have used baileys candy boards before. I have never had a problem with hive beetles but my hives are in full sun.
They are expensive   But my hives were busting full of bees after using the boards. A top feeder is about 5 dollars cheaper but you still have to buy sugar and your time. A candy board put on top and forget.  Can last the whole winter and that hive will be ready to split come early spring  I had no dead hives and have those candy boards in the freezer to use them again this winter.  Thanks

Great question.

I always though "candy boards"  to be the dense sugar feed, but yea i guess they could add that. Simulating more a hard bee bread formula.

As for SHB they are more an issue for the wet pollen patties. Its why i like dry pollen sprinkled on top.

Those, if they are boosting it,  still should not pose as big a problem as regular (shb breeding) patties cause they can not lay eggs in it.

Good catch & it should be verified for sure

Hey Marty,

I thought Bailey's candy boards had pollen sub as well as sugar in them.  Wouldn't this grow hive beetles as well at this time of year?

Cheers,

Brad

Morning,

Jean you can go to baileys & get a candy board. Plenty in stock i think.

Just put your main feeder on the day you leave & one of those. Its basically a slow time release as its hard for the girls to consume at once.

Hey beekeepers! Please see the email below from a new beekeeper asking for a little help feeding one of her hives. Please email her if you live near her and would be willing to help her out. I just live too far away to do it!

Good morning, Christine,
My name is Jean Corbett and I am a novice beekeeper. I am going to be away from home for a week and need someone to feed one of my hives of bees with sugar water while I am gone (09/17/16 - 09/23/16. I live at 2005 Jones Ferry Road in Orange County. I tried to use the interactive map online but was unsuccessful in finding anyone near by. I know Cedric Peace is nearby but have not had a reply from him. At the time I set my hive up, there was also someone on Moon Ridge Road that I failed to visit and now do not remember.

I apologize for the inconvience but would you so kind as to send me a list of beekeeper names close to me?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Sincerely,
JEAN CORBETT
