Starvation can look very much like this as well, so check food stores first.

Marty,

Twitching bees makes me think of the symptoms of the Chronic Bee Paralysis/ Acute Bee Paralysis/Israeli Acute Bee Paralysis/Kashmir Bee viruses.  Check out the description of Chronic Bee Paralysis in this guide. https://www.ars.usda.gov/is/np/honeybeediseases/honeybeediseases.pdf  Does that look like what you are seeing?  All of these viruses are usually closely associated with high varroa mite levels and symptoms generally disappear when the mite loads are reduced.  What's the mite load in this hive?

With that many dead bees I would call an inspector.  They can take a sample and help you determine whether it's one of these viruses, a pesticide exposure or something else.  They need a fresh sample of dead bees to determine if it's a pesticide kill though so call soon.

Sorry for your troubles and good luck,

David

This is the craziness going on inside. Pop open a metal lid -(NO smoke) on a overcast day & blow on bees & even knock on the side and they do this?!

Over 6 years in this game & ive not seen this at all. First i thought robbing cause the other hive was smaller, then chem poisoining (still not ruling that out) when i saw the bees twitching on the landing board & ground and then i opened the lid. Nothing...got nothing

Anyone else in southern chapel hill seeing this?

I know there is a massive uptick in mosquito treatments going on with the zika scare, but bees doing that is new to me.

Anyone else or ideas?

M
