Thanks for pointing out this paper, Erwin. With a 5:1 ratio of Rosa:Malus
pollen, they noted a statistical difference in the shape of the rose hips
that resulted from this cross. The leaf segments changed from 9 to 5 in the
hybrids. The plants are probably not "transgenic", which would be half rose
and half apple. The plants are roses, and mixing in the pollen of apple, a
distant relative of apples, appears to have allowed the Hansa rose to tap
into some of genes present in its makeup that is not normally expressed if
self pollinated. I have asked the authors to comment on the quality and
flavor of the fruit. I will post any updates I receive from them.

That's interesting: breeding roses for fruit. It reminds me of an article I
read, where they used pollen mixtures of apple and roses to pollinate
'Hanza' (rugosa) roses (I think that should be 'Hansa', but it was written
that way).

THE INDUCTION OF FORMATIVE PROCESSES AT 'HANZA' ROSA BY THE ALLOGENIC POLLEN
OF MALUS DOMESTICA BONK.

The article is still available on-line :

They didn't comment much on the possibility of intergeneric hybrids. There
is an e-mail address in the article, so if interested you can perhaps
contact the autor.
