How do you address with the concern about destroying evidence or missing evidence at night? Do you find a grid search is effective, or smaller teams, or most effectively used as a hasty search team?

I've found that for night work, using orange or green filters on my headlight helps....also on the flashlights. They can flip up if I need white lights, but otherwise, don't blind those I'm working with.

Searching at night is like searching during the day, usually cooler and there may be more convective air movement to make it easier for the scent based search animals.
The basic problem for the searcher is night adaption and avoiding flash blindness.  You do not want to use lights because they can ruin night adaptation and startle the
Horses due to creating “monsters” with shadows and sudden movement.  It does not take a lot of light for you and your horse to function at night. The other advantages are
that many search persons knock off for the night giving you a cleaner area to work and most civilians are out of the area after dark.
Based on exercises and jobs night riding is no more dangerous than day riding if you keep the flashlights off and let the horse do the guiding.

Una
Would you please expand on your experiences of seaching with mounted resources at night? That has been a topic recently between several of our units and we would like to know more about what your experiences have been.
Thanks,
