One parade I was in on horseback, paraders ahead of us threw candies into the
audience and of course some of the audience thought it was fun to throw
candies
back at us and our horses.

Concerning this Belleview Iowa parade, one AP story has more detail, including
that the buggy had 3 adults and 2 children onboard. The driver's wife was
ejected when the buggy hit something and died, the driver was dragged by the
reins when the buggy and hitch parted ways, and the third adult and children
were still in the buggy when it rolled over and were not injured.

This AP story also mentions this buggy was a regular fixture in the parade.
So, yes, something very out of the ordinary happened to terrify those horses.
The news stories don't yet have a handle on that.
