Steve,
I'm familiar with your area...having lived in Atlanta and attending Berry College and Mercer University before moving up here to Minnesota a long time ago. Let me see if I can find some resources for you.
Emily

Dear Irv,

Thank you for the CD's - and for your note about an instructor to speak at our meeting.  Do you know of someone closer to the hills of North Georgia who might be able to join us.  We don't have any funds as an organization, but I bet that a couple of us would pitch in for mileage and a dinner if they were in our general area.  As an alternative, we might be able to make a presentation with material on the CD's you were kind enough to send.

Thanks again.

All the best,

Steve

I can travel, but I think it is worth looking for someone closer.
I teach for expenses only to volunteer groups.

Dear Ms. Smith and Mr. Lichenstein.

I am part of a small group which is trying to get a mounted search & rescue organization together here in Dawson County, GA.  We have the support of the local emergency services organizations.  Some of us are CERT volunteers at various levels of training.  We have set a date for our first meeting and plan to push this by word of mouth and press coverage in local newspapers.  The working name is North Georgia Mounted Search and Rescue.  Do either of you know if someone who is experienced in MSAR would be available to come to our initial meeting to address our group?

In the meantime I have noted all the references in the correspondence among both of you and Mary Jo Jackson and am a bit overwhelmed by all the materials.

Please let me know if you need any further information.  Thank you for any assistance you can lend to our efforts.

All the best,
Steve

Since you are affiliated with a fire company/district you are somewhat organized.  Whatever standards the fire district has adopted will apply to you as well.
You will have to find out whether they have adopted NFPA practices and standards or somebody else’s.  There are also standards published by ASTM.
There are various standard operating guidelines and search theory publications around, either in the archives here at MSAR or on request from members of the list.

I strongly suggest you obtain and read search management texts such as Search is an Emergency, Managing the Search Function, Managing Search Operations, papers on search subject behavior, and anything published by Del Norris, the ISPT, or Ab Taylor (mantracking).  MSAR is a tool in the search incident manager’s toolbox.  You will need to interact with other tools—mantrackers, dog handlers, aircraft, etc.  By learning how each tool works and how to use it you become a better searcher. And better searchers find subjects faster and with less resources expended. If you send me (ilichten1@verizon.net) a mailing address I can send you a collection of documents on CD.
