I disagree. I use temporary single and double strand hot fences all the time.
A hard fence isn't viable for temporary reasons. You can use wire or white
flat tape(drawing blank on official name), which is what I use for temporary
fences mostly. They also conduct the electricity better and do not cut. If
you know your horses, then you would know what kind of fencing you can and
cannot use before you ever start out. I can use the white tape (not hot) for
3 of my horses and fiberglass poles and not even bat an eye. For the rest I
can use the same fencing hot and it is fine.

Until the last mare and last gelding we added to the herd I would have
agreed with you Terilynne. We use Horseguard webbed electric tape for
all our perimeter fencing. Our horses respect it very well!! However the
last older mare we added did NOT respect it. We had her separated from
the herd with one strand- she went under it. The herd was running her
around, we heard, and removed her. We added another strand. She went
through both of them. We then decided that at her age if she was willing
to take her chances with the herd we would just watch and supervise. A
few minor skirmishes and all was well. BUT- the elec tape did not work
in her case. Another case is the gelding I just wrote about. NO fear or
respect of hotwire. We ended up with pipe corral between the herd and
him. THAT worked although he dented it in a few places. Not mean by a
long shot- just enthusiastic and energetic. <G>

So, yes in general elec wire or webbing will work. However even though
you may know your own herd when adding a new and strange horse to the
mix due diligence is required. It's best to be prepared that they may
not respect the wire. If they do- GREAT, if they don't- have an
alternate plan ready to put into place. If you don't have the room or
resources for an alternate great consideration should be given to
acquiring another horse. <G>
