Subject: [sarinfo] Vorarlberg, Austria: Mountain rescue has financial
problems

AUSTRIAN MOUNTAIN RESCUE COMPLAINS OF FINANCIAL PROBLEMS: Even though its
1,000 or volunteer members respond to rescue missions without being paid,
the organization is running out of money mainly because of the cost of
insurance for the rescuers. According to the regional president Gebhard
Barbisch in the province of Vorarlberg, one of Austria's smaller provinces,
is that the cost of insurance for the rescue organization has increased
sharply while at the same time the government is providing less financial
support. Another problem is that the social insurance does not cover the
costs of a a rescue to the nearest travelled road because it does not cover
by law sport and recreational accidents. Therefore Barbisch says that the
public has to realize that rescues are not without costs even if a
helicopter is not required.

Keep in mind that with its 1,000 members, Vorarlberg is on of Austria's
smaller provinces compared to Tirol or Steirmark.
