I know that WNV and the possibilities of birth defects has been a very
real problem. Also Fort Dodge only has a provisional permit for use. In
other words they can't guarantee that it works all the time but it has a
high enough effectiveness rate and a low enough side affect rate to get
it approved for use while tests are continuing. That doesn't sound safe
to me! I did not vaccinate my horses at first but finally did last year
when it appeared in So Cal. I don't breed so I don't have those issues.
I know that many breeders are vaccinating and it appears that the basic
feeling is that yes, there are some problems, but they are low compared
to numbers vaccinated. It's a tough call- balancing the potential
infection and it's consequences against the potential side affects.
Because my horses are exposed to many horses from many different
situations I keep them up to date on vaccinations in general. It did
take me awhile to decide to do West Nile. I'm glad it is done but we all
need to remember it is NOT proven to be 100% effective- your horse could
still get infected.

What portable anti-mosquito measures, if any, could an MSAR team take to
a mutual aid callout where a problem with insects could exist? (besides
bug sprays....)
