Thanks for the explanation, Richard. I also appreciate your "wait and see" attitude about jumping into GAPS.

The FDA's proposed rule on requiring GAP-type protocols has a comment period that ends soon.

The "Fact Sheet on the FSMA Proposed Rule for Produce: Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption" can be found at http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/FSMA/ucm334114.htm.

The fact sheet states that farms that produce less than $25,000/year are exempt and those that produce up to $500,000 per year in sales have some exemptions. The rule also allows the FDA to remove exemptions "if FDA determines it is necessary to protect the public health and prevent or mitigate an outbreak based on conditions or conduct that create the potential for the farm’s produce to cause an outbreak."
