Hi All,

The first two proposed rules issued by FDA are some 1700 pages thick. A task force coordinated by the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) that worked on getting exemptions in the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is now going through the rules line by line. There's a lot of red flags -- and mid-March there will be a launch of national Comment Campaign reaching out to farmers and eaters concerned about impacts on the smaller farm sector and the growth of the food movement.

This can potentially have a large effect. Please stay tuned -- our concerted responses will be very important. The comment period is scheduled to end May 16th.

Thanks for the explanation, Richard. I also appreciate your "wait and
see" attitude about jumping into GAPS.

The FDA's proposed rule on requiring GAP-type protocols has a comment
period that ends soon.

The "Fact Sheet on the FSMA Proposed Rule for Produce: Standards for the
Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human
Consumption" can be found at
http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/FSMA/ucm334114.htm.

The fact sheet states that farms that produce less than $25,000/year are
exempt and those that produce up to $500,000 per year in sales have some
exemptions. The rule also allows the FDA to remove exemptions "if FDA
determines it is necessary to protect the public health and prevent or
mitigate an outbreak based on conditions or conduct that create the
potential for the farm?s produce to cause an outbreak."

Here is a link to the entire proposed rule.
