I have an old Howard Rotovator (with multiple gear box aka "Selectatilth") that I wouldn't trade for the world.  Recently I have found good help with parts and information from Deur Implement in Michigan.  Peter Deur is quite knowledgeable about Howards even though his business card doesn't emphasize them.  His card does mention Maschio tillers ... so I would give him a try for any parts questions.
Re getting the work done: I vote with the others re repairing v. buying new, but it does take finding the right person.  I have lucked out in finding a tractor mechanic who retired to my area recently.  He never wants money, just vegetables and the satisfaction of being useful again.  I also get great mechanical help from a retired carpenter who grew up on a farm in upstate NY and who has a prodigious knowledge of how to maintain and repair equipment.  Those folks are out there ... just gotta find them.
Good luck.
