Title: Re: [Market-farming] Jang double plow shoe
I have the double disc opener and it deals very well with residues, cutting them and pushing them out of the way. I know an organic farmer who has sown beets right in a dead cover crop, without tillage, with success.

I use it anytime we have to deal with a moderate amount of residues on the soil. The depth adjustment might not be as accurate as it is with the regular shoe, but it has worked fine with us.

Best wishes for 2012!

Antoine

While we’re on the topic of Jang seeders, does anyone have any experience with the double disc opener compared to the standard shoe? As I try to incorporate more cover cropping and less tillage into my operation, dealing with higher residue levels is becoming a challenge – I’d be interested in hearing other people’s ideas and experiences.

We've used this for radishes when we are doing cherry belle and french breakfast types where high density beds work very well. It also seemed to work will with carrots, allowing us to do high density plantings followed by a burn weeding pass a couple days later (I would not suggest doing this is you are going to hand weed beds).  If you do not have double row seed wheels you will need to purchase them adding another 20.00 per wheel, so you may be looking at even more additional costs.

We have also used it to limited effect with our micro lettuce/mizuna/arugula/swiss chard beds and seems to work well but I think they best route to go is a five or six row seeder for these, which are expensive but a massive time saver when you do the math (Time (number of beds) x (passes) x (rotation plantings) x (years)).

It works and works well.  We have not had any issues with it, but after a year of using it I have not crunched the numbers to see if it is worth the 140.00 we spent (shoe and three wheels), but I think it did.  We harvested nearly a quarter ton of radishes this year which represent a whole lot of passes with the seeder.

You may also want to try Columbus Irrigation in Ohio as a source for the shoe.  They MIGHT be competitively priced compared to Johnny's.
