Well I don't know where you are located but here in south central Wisconsin
we find all Rudbeckia susceptible to a disease that causes sudden wilt after
cutting. Sometimes you can tell which plants are affected because you can
see brown in the pith of the stem when you cut. Eventually the disease will
show up on the plant itself with brown/black lesions and general decline and
death of the plant. I generally find if I just let the Rudbeckia reseed in
my perennial garden rather than sow and transplant I can forestall the
problem. I don't know why.
I have found Rudbeckia subtomentosa, Brown Eyed Susan, a native, that likes
a little moister soil, better all around in stem strength and resistance to
the disease.
All that said last week, after 2 weeks of solid rain, 2 florists complained
that the R. subtomentosa 'went down' after they sent out arrangements to
customers. Hate that when it happens. Perhaps the wetness has triggered the
problem?
For me all Rudbeckia are becoming problematic and may have to switch
entirely to Solidagos.. ha.

Any experience on this as a cut flower? I took some to market last weekend.
They looked great until late on a hot afternoon -- their little heads
started to wilt over. I thought it was just the heat outside. I put one in
water in the house and got the same effect after two days in the vase. Many
websites say it is a good cut flower.

Any experience with this or are there any tricks for this one?

Thanks,
Sheila

I haven't noticed a drop off here but I imagine the ins\tense heat is
keeping
some people away from outdoor markets.
