Consistent use of mulches will:

nearly eliminate weed pressure; prevent soil splashing on foliage which helps to control diseases (particularly in zinnias etc); maintain even moisture and soil temperature levels leading to better bloom quality and post-harvest longevity; faciliatate labor friendly harvest; build organic matter and feed the soil ecosystem gently over time resulting in a better balance in, and plant use of, available nutrients; be more economical if you establish a cost benefit for these advantages even before you calculate the long term environmental costs of applying chemical herbicides.

This is not intended to be an "organic rant".  After 30 years in most areas of growing most things commercially, I choose organic methods as sound business practice.  Research the rapidly increasing problem of herbicide resistence in serious agricultural weeds species as a contrast before applying a chemical solution.  The herbicides look effective, but it is the costliest form of weed control EVER and all levels.
