Hello, Chris:

Good questions! The first year, I had problems moving our first
Salatin-style pen because I did not have a good enough dolly. The
solution I eventually discovered was to slit a 10 foot section of 4
inche PVC and snap it onto the back bottom brace. So, now each pen has
it's own smooth bottom back to make it easier to pull from the front
(solid-walled end). The rounded PVC acts similar to the rounded part of
a ski. It really does work!

Salatin doesn't explain the pen handles very clearly. I used eye bolts
at each corner and tied some nylon rope to them. I also slid a piece of
old garden hose on the rope handle, thereby making it easier on my
hands.

We still use 10 x 12 pens. We have used anywhere from 75 to 100 birds
in each pen. They certainly do a great job of introducing nitrogen into
the soil! ;o)

Regarding the cattle, just make sure that they are not in the same
pasture as the chickens are at the same time. You know how cattle love
to rub up against things. They'll destroy your pastured poultry pens in
no time!

Hope this info helps!

Peace,

Dave L.

P.S. I am familiar with the Land Stewardship Project. They really
encourage a return to the small family farm. It's definitely better for
the environment and for preserving wildlife habitat.
