Dear all - I'm trying Jericho lettuce out for the first time this summer. Its doing well so far, the heads are about 4 inches tall, but its not growing into a head like the romaine heads you see in the grocery store. They're more like a butterhead, with the leaves spread out, rather than a tight compact head. I've never grown a romaine before. Do you have to do something to it to get it to form tight heads? Or is the shape of my heads indicative of something I'm doing wrong?
I'm mostly just curious about this. If I can bring tasty lettuce to my market in the middle of July, people aren't going to care what the shape of the head is. So far, it tastes great. Thanks for any info -

BTW - thought I'd share a success story after all the help you all gave me this spring. I followed everyone's advice for spring soil prep and tomato planting and despite 13 inches of rain in the 2 weeks right after planting, my tomatoes and peppers are beautiful. It looks as though I'm finally making some progress in my quest to turn red clay sunsoil into somewhat fertile vegetable land. I've also got big beautiful squash plants this year - last year I couldn't even coax the zucchini into living. Thanks for all the help - J
