Allan,

The process is best done over the winter by shallow tilling the soil twice
in late summer to kill the sod, planting a winter cover crop, and then
tilling in the cover crop in the Spring.

It can be reasonably accomplished in one season by planting later than
normal. We have a couple of acres we are doing this with this year. We
have shallow tilled once and will do this again around mid-April. This
kills most of the permanent sod. We will incorporate that and allow it to
sit for 2-3 weeks before we make one more shallow pass to prepare the seed
bed.

We are also experimenting with some companion crops to help with weed and
grass competition.

Regards

Rick

Can someone share some tips on turning pasture into bed with a
rotivator? From comments made, it sounds like it's practical without
sod removal, etc. I haven't used one before and have about an 1/8th
of acres of pasture that I'd like to make into a cornfield by late
spring. Thanks -Allan
