please allow the young, over-worked, under-paid/appreciated, and obviously stupid person to comment:

blistery, blustery, blue

blue in the face, that is.

i.e. provide/give/tutor/mentor/genuflect until you are blue in the face...... then see where/what it gets you.

this whole issue is beyond my level of comprehension. whatever happened to the whole "god helps those who help themselves" thing??

i mean, place every tool known to man in front of someone and what happens to their motivation to accomplish anything? well, sit tight and soon enough another bus of liberals (in an election year) will be by to provide whatever else you desire...

add to this the pervasive disinterest in technology / technological advancement by the masses and you've got a nice prescription for millions of dollars of IT equipment gathering dust.

sorry to sound like such an a**hole, but no one is coming into my house to give me free DSL and a new PC. in fact, i can't even seem to get DSL installed via a _paid_ service. but that is beside the point. what really *is* the point is, until someone (by that, i mean ANYONE) is enlightened enough to perceive their own future and take an interest in it, there is no sense in handing them a cow they will not take the time to milk.

next, consider the average persons interest level in computers. any kid in the country who enjoys computers is likely branded a "sissy" and tortured because of their interest. and if they maintain their personal motivational level, eventually, they get the hell out of there and make some dough in the city. i'm sorry, but this hearkens back to my personal responsibility issue. i'm not about to head out to fuquay to take heckling from some rednecks' kids about being a "geek" or a "weirdo" --- all while i'm trying to do my laudable civic duty and bridge the "digital divide."

how 'bout we get realistic and rename it the "cultural divide" or something else more accurate.

to continue: there are PCs and internet service available free to anyone in almost all public libraries. public schools (even in rural areas) are installing machines and service all the time. i.e. "the project is coming along." so now why the push to get f*cking broadband out to the sticks?? so they can look at bestiality porn that much quicker??

this is all totally ridiculous. place a greater responsibility (or burden if you're evil) on those _already_ paying the majority of taxes and abiding by the social contract, so those slacking can slack more. puh-leeze.

i am not against social programs, i just think that this issue has been twisted out of proportion to look like we are all taking advantage of those "poor people" whilst we kick back smoking cigars and passing the Beluga; all the while plotting our next world-domination tactic to keep the masses at our feet. last time i checked (20 minutes ago) my life was *not* like this.

what about incentive?
what about personal drive?
what about taking an interest in your self/life/education/future?

maybe we should be teaching these kids that "the rest of your life will be a total f*cking waste unless you learn a valuable skill?"

not free-for-alls.

debate welcomed : maybe i'm dumber than i think.
