I bought a few bags of coal a few years ago to throw in the
woodstoves. It consisted of chunks about the size of a brick on
average. Towards the end of winter my shop woodstove stopped drawing
well and when I finally got up on the shop roof to see what was up I
found the bird screen/spark arrester mesh clocked up with a crusty
soot. I cleaned all that crud off and bought one of those chimney
sweeping logs that claim to clean your flue as they burn. I've been
judicious in my burning of coal since then. In truth I gave the rest
of the coal away.
