How about E. P. Sanders's volume in the Oxford "Past Masters" series? It's
short and written with clarity and vigor. Its only real defect, I think, is
its failure to consider the subjective genitive construal of PISTIS
CHRISTOU. Fitzmyer's _Paul and His Theology_ (Prentice Hall) is a less
engaging read but well informed and brief.

3) the period of earliest Christianity.

At the risk of appearing as Johnny One-Note, Sander's _Historical Figure of
Jesus_ (Penguin) does a very nice job with these. They're of course
presented in relation to the reconstruction of Jesus' ministry, but that
doesn't lessen their value.

Hope this is helpful.
