Cut & Paste License is the best so far - I agree completely with the act-centric simplicity and common knowledge of the term. Now extending to all computer users who may or may not do it too.
Sounds more pro-active, less restrictive too - A license to cut and paste.

This should be the one to beat, thanks Lisa!

I guess I did not care for it much when I first saw it. Doesn't seem to suggest transforming or altering enough. But Chris's reasons for why it is good are all excellent and quite correct! And I do like the fact that its a term many computer users know ( or, do they? is it only a MAC term? I am PC illiterate).

And....it's cute!.

I am still not clear on how much addditonal easily accessible info is going to be attached to the license to go into more depth about all that it is and is not for, philisophical/cultrual/ethical reasons why we would encourgae artists to adopt this particular license, etc. ( all stuff we discussed at some point before we went public with this list) ) The month of CC silence has made a lot of things rather fuzzy in my brain.....

I like 'cut and paste' too. Not just to the point, also laden with nice connotations.

Media-format-neutral. Implies taking a section and not the whole. De-mystifies the creative process. Concrete. Down-to-earth. Hearkens back to analog tape splicing, yet emphasizes the computer-driven urgency of the initiative. Grounded in common experience, not just art-world or media-world or law-world lingo.

"cut and paste" license seems simple and to the point.

Beyond File-Sharing, a Nation of Copiers

broad relationship between new technology and a value system that seems
shaped to it. In a nation that flaunts its capacities to produce and
consume, much of the culture's heat now lies with the ability to cut,

Re: the name of the sampling licence. I'm very fond of:

The "cut, paste, clip, sample, quote, recycle, customize and
recirculate" Licence.

Or,

The Give and Take Licence for Use in Sampling and Collage.

But my best guess is that either of these names, or any other name we
chose, would inevitably get reduced to

"The Sampling Licence",

which would be perfectly adequate.

so that's my vote,
