(without gv - did you compile it yourself, Ron?)

No. Standard SW7.1 package.
Thanks, I never thought of looking there.

to print
double-sided that way, and the bottoms of the pages were all chopped off
and I don't know how to fix that with gs (I used a black pen) and it is
very easy with netpbm.

Sometimes I have a similar problem with the page size being different to the image size. When I do, I switch to DOS and print with printgf - shareware - that can be configured to make the image fit the paper size.

I have used printgf. I don't want to shrink the image, I want to print with 1:1 pixel to dot, or it will get even fuzzier. Moving it up 1/2" works well.

Sindi, if you really have difficulty getting this thing to print clearly, and if you have a fax number, I can try to print the score here and fax it to you.

Thanks, but fax will make it fuzzier again. Fax is 200x200 dpi.
I could also scan a library copy but I am trying to learn something.

This was www.sheetmusicarchive.net. Their copy is the one with color, and 150 dpi, and too long. I found one of the 6 partitas at www.mutopiaproject.org, where someone freshly typeset it. It looks much clearer and I bet it is a BW pdf file. The page is centered and won't get chopped off.

xpdf's pdftoppm could not create three fonts, but produced a set of very clear page images, in 8-bit color (the default for pdftoppm) and 150 dpi (the default). 99.9 percent of cpu time is being used. At 300 dpi it ran out of disk space on page 8. Too many 6MB color files. Cleanup time.

pdftoppm --help suggested using -mono switch. I tried, twice.
This looked like it worked but complained about several pages of missing fonts and produced a chopped off first page and then the rest of 0 length.

pdfimages is faster for files that are images but this one is not.

I will report back if David's script does not work. Thanks to all for the
help. Some day I may post a midi file of the results.

I would look forward to that. :)

Do I need to record each voice of a 3-part fugue separately with Rosegarden?

You will need to sequence a separate track for each musical part, otherwise it just gets too complicated no matter which software you use.

I would need to play the part that is already recorded from the midi file while recording the next voice from the piano. Or keep very strict rhythm.

Regards,
Ron
