Are you sure it's parallel? I've never heard of a parallel modem; just serial
ones.

Try plugging it into a serial port instead. If you only have one serial port,
you can then use /dev/ttyS0 to access it.

For testing, run microcom. If one of the ports gets a response, then type ATZ.
If you get the OK signal in reply, your modem is working.
