Be aware that FreeDOS is undergoing constant development, too. They're
preparing for a milestone 1.0 release in the next few months. It's
possible that the defrag problems you've experienced have been fixed in
some newer version: have you downloaded the most recent version? When I
was fiddling with USB mass storage under FreeDOS and communicating with
one of the developers about it, he was encouraging me to download the
latest kernel and version of format which, though only 3 or 4 months old,
had already been updated/superceded.
