Hello all:

ויקראו בספר בתורת האלהים מפרש ושום שכל ויבינו במקרא

Nehemiah 8:8 implies the highly trained scribes and/or priests represented
the exclusive and intended consumers of the written biblical language. These
temple officials orally explained the meaning of the written language to the
people.

The technical ongoing discussion at this forum of the written language tends
to support that view.

Perhaps the 736 page textbook on Dermatologic Differential Diagnosis
further confirms the point. The language and vocabulary of that book
intended for a relatively few highly trained physicians, who in turn orally
explain to their customers in simpler every day language, relevant
technical written points.

And certainly, the mainstream religions today, hew to that view.

A grand canyon, broad and deep, appears to have existed between written
biblical hebrew and the spoken language.

regards,

fred burlingame
