i've had a skype number before that i put a florida area code on so my
friends there could call me and vice-versa without paying toll. it worked
fine until I was on satellite. there were no ads, etc, and hmmm i think it
took voice mail messages if i wasn't around, can't remember now, as i might
be confusing that with other similar services that i used concurrently....
but i'm pretty sure i remember voice messages on skype and going thru once in
a while and deleting old ones.
There is a tiny program that is installed that is a small telephone
"console". If the magicjack is plugged in, it activates otherwise it
does not run at all. It serves small ads in a little display on the
"phone" but so far (after 2.5 yrs) they are only magicjack messages
like "set up your free voicemail by dialing x" and for the dirt cheap
international rates. As to the international rates- if I had someone
overseas I called regularly I'd just buy and mail them a magicjack,
after registering it with a local number for me.
I suppose skype is the same way, but magicjack emails you your
voicemail messages in "wav" format if you so choose.
I actually bought it to use as a second business line (have you priced
commercial phone service lately?) and it even handles a fax machine.
Magic jack does not guarantee the fax usage, but acknowledges that
some do it.
Anyway, I'm pretty fastidious with my computers, and have used the
device on at least four different boxes so far. No sign of spyware
whatsoever.
Yes, I use Skype for voice mail. I get emails informing me of the voice mail
as it arrives. I can check voice mail from any computer on which I've
installed Skype. No ads.
I also use Skype for free instant messaging with family who also have Skype.
