IMHO, the convention itself is arbitrary (as is the .nu TLD altogether), but the principle of following conventions is not. :-)

BTW: What is the preferred pronunciation of  "nu.xom"? "noo dot zom"? "en yoo dot ex oh em"?

No, that would be a clear violation of Java conventions, which should
begin with a reversed domain name. I object strenuously to packages
that don't adhere to this.
