Hey XYC family,

Hope everyone is frolicking in the gorgeous weather and wearing sun protection. Keep out the alpha rays. You don't get old.

Anyways, here's some new stuff that JJ and I put into rotation today. Don't be alarmed that there's no Light #9. There will be soon. But it goes from 8 to 10 for now.

LIGHT

Light #5

  • Sao Paulo Underground - Beija Flors Veiho E Sujo (CUNEIFORM)

SPU consists of currently-rotating cornet player Rob Mazurek, Guilherme Grenado (keys/synth), and Mauricio Takara (percussion/electronics). Bursts of loud, jubilant improvisation set over a general percussive structure. Easy on the ears, and potential segue material for genre-hopping during your show.

  • Matt Shadetek - The Empire Never Ended  (Dutty Artz)

Shadetek is a dubbed-out tropical dancehall musician and head of the Brooklyn-based Dutty Artz along with DJ/Rupture. This album of straight-up hip-hop instrumentals has the drum machines firing on all engines, and the result is an interesting twist on southern hip-hop trap beats.

  • V/A - Geko Jones & Atropolis Presents: Palenque Records Remixed (Dutty Artz)

New York DJs Geko Jones and Atropolis team up to remix songs from Afro-Colombian label Palenque Records.

  • Gaudi - In Between Times (SIX DEGREES RECORDS) [Adds 5/26]

Italian producer Daniele Gaudi draws on his knowledge of (and professional connections to) the worlds of dub, reggae, and roots music to craft this album of roots-inspired electronica. Featuring musical cameos by Lee Scratch Perry and The Orb.

Light #6

  • A-Sun Amissa - You Stood Up For Victory, We Stood Up For Less (GIZEH RECORDS)

This trio from Leeds make minimalist acoustic drone with remarkably thick underlying ambience. A full sound sans percussion or vocals.

  • Julian Lynch - Lines (UNDERWATER PEOPLES)

Third full-length from New Jersey-bred ethnomusicologist Lynch. Innovative instrumentation, hazy saccharine pop melodies, and murmured falsetto vocals.

  • Eugene Carchesio - Circle Music II (ROOM40)

Brisbane-based artist Carchesio gives us his second album of circle music: bare, intricate electronic rhythms. Pulsing repetition propels these tracks forward with a precise elegance.

  • Anomonous - S/T (PROM NIGHT)

One 45-minute slow-burner from this improvisational Brooklyn trio. Drifts from ambient synth drones and ghostly squeaks to seasick bouts of piano bashing, creepy laughter, and horn improves from the bottom of a whale's belly.

Light #10

  • The Hussy - Pagan Hiss (SOUTHPAW RECORDS)

Co-ed two-piece rock band with undeniable similarities to The White Stripes. Catchy pop riffs under a gritty surface. See Ty Segall.

  • Meat Puppets - Rat Farm (MEGAFORCE RECORDS)

14th album from detuned Phoenix, AZ rockers Meat Puppets. This album tends towards some kind of twangy alt. country rock, a throwback to their '87 LP Huevos.

  • Futurebirds - Baba Yaga (VL4L/FAT POSSUM)

Second full-length from Athens, GA psych / indie / 'verbed out country boys who are a less drunk, more high Drive By Truckers.

  • No Joy - Wait To Pleasure (MEXICAN SUMMER)

2nd full-length from Montreal shoegaze trio No Joy. Female vocals and towering walls of loud!

SINGLES

·         Drewsky - Straight From The Hideout (Chicago Classic Edition)

This is a re-release of a hard-to-find 1992 12” by Chicago ‘ghetto house’ artist Drewsky originally out on the Nite Life label. The clapping sounds of the snares are banging, and while the bass gets so heavy as to move from ‘bump’ to ‘thump’ at times, an array of adventurous synth sounds reign things in, resulting in an incredibly danceable package.

·         Mike Dehnert - Placide EP (Fach Werk)

Berlin producer and Fach Werk label head Mike Dehnert delivers an incredibly diverse slab of techno. The goal of Dehnert’s music (and label) is to keep things heavy without sacrificing the funk.

·         R-Zone - R-Zone 01 (R-Zone)

The Dutch DJ collective behind Crème Organization has decided to start the R-Zone label in order to release anonymous 12” releases by ‘a range of established producers.’ So I don’t know if there is one person behind R-Zone 01 or not. But I do know that if this sounds spooky, mischievous, but also kind of silly, then just wait until you give this a spin!

·         Svengalisghost - Vicious Circle 12” (L.I.E.S.)

Marquis Cooper aka Chicago underground’s Svengalisghost is going hard on this release, which apparently was recorded ‘somewhere between the woods of North Carolina and the streets of NYC.’ This is definitely house music: deep, head-spinning, full of warbling synths. And despite the strong percussion and building nature, this is not really dance music.

·         Joey Anderson - Diagram Solutions 12-inch (Inimeg Records)

Dark, hypnotic 12-inch from NY-Based producer Joey Anderson. Anderson has a tendency to introduce elements into his mix and take them right out again. Can be distracting and arrhythmic, but overall an enjoyable listen. Some people may even be into that sort of thing.

·         Dolo Percussion - Dolo Percussion 12-inch (L.I.E.S.)

DC-based Maxmillion Dunbar returns to Long Island Electrical Systems as Dolo Percussion. The A side is his no-frills synth percussion one-man drum circle. The B side adds some embellishments: some glimmering synth ambience in B1 and a bassline in B2.

·         Xamiga – Oceania 10-inch (Clone Records)

Xamiga is Legowelt (Dutchman Danny Wolfers) and Xosar (SoCal expat Sheela Rahman); and this release follows their debut 12-inch last year on Rush Hour. “Oceania,” on the A-side, is a dreamy aquatic voyage. “Xosheeba” is a taut, spooky 4-on-the-floor dance track. “Atlantis Force Code” closes the B-side with jaunty flair and synth-garbled vox.

·         E.R.P. - Alsoran (Clone Records)

2013 repress of E.R.P.’s 2007 Alsoran 12-inch. E.R.P. is the project of Texas-based Gerard Hanson (Convextion). Restrained and subdued dance floor tracks for the end of the party.

That's all for now! Send us an email if you have any questions/concerns/feedback, or feel free to stop by our office hours on Wednesday evening (6ish to 7ish!)

Making the weekends longer than the weeks,

JJ & Joe
