As school winds down, WXYC is windin' up warmin' up for the winter. Sorry for the lack of wit, but I am tired.
Tonight on the Inside Track at 9pm, check out the compilation 'Imaginational Anthem, Vol. 5' out on Tompkins Square. The 5th in the label's series features some of the best solo acoustic guitar players working today. This volume was curated by Vermont musician Sam Moss and features several xyc-favorites like Steve Gunn, Daniel Bachman, Bill Orcutt, Yair Yona, and more.
Then, tune in Sunday at 1pm for Hell or High Water as Blanche will focus on music from the cotton mill industry in the 1920s and 1930s South (mostly from North Carolina). Prepare to learn about the 1929 Gastonia Strike (along with other simultaneous textile mill strikes) and the work and protest songs that provided the soundtrack for the 1920s labor movement. Specific names include: the Dixion Brothers, Dave McCarn, Ella May Wiggins, and Malvina Rynolds among others!!
Take a break at 2pm on Broken Music as David H will survey the soundtrack work of Australian experimental film maker Arthur Cantrill. For the last five decades, Arthur and his wife Corinne have amassed a dazzling body of work, covering art documentaries, children's films, and a number of innovative, multi-screen experimental pieces. Arthur's soundtracks form the backbone to many of these works, pieced together on several Revox tape machines from his arsenal of environmental recordings, household objects and violin work. Tune in at 2pm.
Then, at 8pm, take a break from studying with SportsRap, as the panel welcomes back a couple special guests, while breaking down Carolina Basketball & Volleyball, give some insight into the men and women's soccer team, and more Carolina Basketball. Listen up and call in.
Finally, Monday at 9pm on the Outside Track we have the latest by Ital, 'Dream On,' out on Planet Mu. 'Dream On' is the newest from Daniel Martin-McCormick's project Ital and it is exactly what you expect when you let a rhythm-bent punk rocker make dance music. The synths quickly grab you in, the rhythms get a bit contorted without ever feeling intentionally weird. Enjoy the ride!
Go Heels,
JJ
