Tune in to WXYC's Thursday Night Feature this week from 9PM to
midnight as we explore Gamelan music, the ceremonial music that
originated on the Indonesian islands Bali and Java. To refresh your
memory, a Gamelan, or "orchestra," is a collective of up to 70 - 80
instruments like gongs, drums and other percussion. Sometimes
including stringed instruments, flutes, and vocalists, a complete
Gamelan often consists of 2 nearly-identical sets of gongs, bells, and
drums. One is tuned to the 5-note "slendro" scale and the other to
the 7-note "pelong" scale, and no orchestras are tuned exactly alike.
The sound is complex and beautiful, with varying layers building from
a melodic skeleton to make the whole piece.

You'll learn about the cultural and historical background of the
music, the differences between the Balinese and Javanese subgenres,
the music's form today, and influences of Gamelan on other musics.
UNC-CH Professor of Music Sarah Weiss will be present to share her
insight; she's studied Javanese Gamelan and leads a local ensemble.
