Hi, Chritsobal Palmer and all,

We have been waiting for this day for a while.

Many thanks to all of the efforts of growing the UNC LUG.
I believe that to have an active LUG will benefit the university as a whole.

Most of you might have noticed that we've had a SuSE 10 event
a few weeks ago in my department. There will be a SuSE admin talk
on Campus at May 8th. I will forward the directions and schedule
as soon as we have the details.

Back to Sep 13, 2002, we had invited RedHat Llinux group did
a talk at UNC campus while the RedHat 8 was about to release.
Josep L. Guallar-Esteve, QA-Test Engineer, and Jeremy Hogan
from RedHat came to our campus and distributed full version RH8
(said demo before it was released). I remember Mr. Jason Li and
some of his OASIS people showed at that meeting. Later we had
tried to setup a RedHat Linux UNC Venue meeting in July 1st of
2004, with the support of Mr. Bil Hayes from CS, but unfortunately
that did not happen due to some reasons (see the attached email
at the end of this message). I have to say that Bil is always there
when I need some help and support. Thanks Bil.

Giving to total amount of LINUX OS installed on campus and the maturity
of the LINUX local community at UNC, I wish we would have an active
forum with experienced Linux users helping each other at UNC,
just like the DULUG at Duke and TRILUG in this area.

Based on my previous experience, the location and meeting facility
should not be a problem at UNC. There are two issues usually making
some difficulties for IT (system admin, Linux) oriented events:
Parking and the schedule.

We had a monthly IT seminar going on at UNC for about two years eventually
give up due to the in-efficient afterhour parking difficulties. The afterhour
schedule will not meet everyone's calendar for sure and the daytime schedule
will sometime conflict with IT situations on campus, etc. To have an active forum
to discuss and come to an agreement on these kind of event is very necessary.
We have an RHCE class running for more than a year and we all feel that the
email list/forum is the best tool to quickly reach everyone to resolve schedule
issues or UNC event conflicts.

Also for your reference, there are many LINUX related resources in
this area, such as the TRILUG monthly meeting, NC*SA
monthly meeting, Perl User Group monthly meeting, etc. It is very helpful
if you have time to take advantage of these meetings in a regular basis.
In June, we are inviting LOPSA leaders to come to UNC talking about
System Security and Administration issues. I will keep you posted.

Thanks,

Liyun Yu, Ph.D.
System Specialist
Dept of Radiation Oncology

I've been pushing for the creation of a more active LUG here at
UNC. Take a look at

Dear Mr. Jeremy Hogan,

After some conversation with Mr Bil Hayes, the network manager
at UNC Computer Science, we will host the first RH Linux UNC venue
meeting at July 1st, Thursday, at 5:30pm at UNC Computer Science
- Sitterson Hall. A room is reserved for this meeting.

We wish to start the meeting at 5:30pm since it would be much easier to
catch more UNC folks to access this meeting. Usually a meeting after
6pm is hard to attract audience at UNC. Please confirm the date & time by your
early convenience. We will make the announcement as soon as we have
your reply.

Sitterson Hall is fully equipped. You may bring the engineer if needed to
do an on-site presentation, in addition to the discussion. It is also possible
to broadcast for the long run.

The location of CS at UNC is very close to Franklin Street at Chapel Hill,
it would be very convenient for traveling and parking.

The RedHat Wide Open magazine was warmly
welcomed at UNC. All issues were gone the same day when I posted
to the UNC Support list. I wish you would bring more to the meeting if
possible.

Thanks,

Liyun
