I am trying to build a backup solution for a small home network (3 systems total; 1 WinXP; 1 Gentoo Linux; and 1 RHEL 3). I have a large hard drive (160 Gb) on the RH system that will store all backup info. I want to setup an automated and reliable daily backup to the RH system. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have looked at AMANDA and tar/cron jobs but I am not sure if either are really what I am looking for. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'd look at rsync:

1. Install rsync into /usr/local/

2. Create a seperate user account for the backup process on the server you are going to copy from and to. I create a user called rsync on both servers.

3. Use ssh-keygen and create create a key without a password

ssh-keygen -t dsa

- Place the file id_dsa in the .ssh directory of the rsync user

- Place the file authorized_keys into the server .ssh directory of where the data will be copied to.

4. Make sure that the ssh daemon allows keys. You can usually find the config for this under /etc/ssh/sshd_config

5. Add this to your crontab -e under the user rsync

0 0 * * * /usr/local/bin/rsync -av -e ssh [copy from directory] rsync@[ip address]:[copy to directory]
