hello again to all,
to answer Marie's question and  to answer in general:
I don't have actual miles because when I have gone in before, it has always been based on what there is to
see and explore, and have adjusted saddle time accordingly. Best  guess is at least 5 miles each way. That is
to say one way in and out since it is a box canyon. I figure on, with stops and talks, 5 hours. This does not figure
in any side trips. To get the most from this ride/lecture, I would highly recommend the side hikes (sans horses)
to avoid trampling any artifacts and practice leave no trace principles. The side hikes are not mandatory and any one
can leave the ride at any time. However, I encourage any and all to participate in the ride in it's entirety, as it will be another year before it is offered again and possibly in a different location. Keep in touch as I will be organizing a Biology ride in spring. An Archeology ride is in the works as is a possible Paleobotany ride.  I don't yet know the locations of these future rides, but I' sure you will be impressed with the expertise of the professionals involved.
I'm looking forward to this exciting ride and as you all are, I'm sure.
This is my first endeavor  to this kind of ride, so please be patient and kind. I want to do more of these kinds of
"theme rides" as they have proven to be popular and educational. I have always had a passion for geology and
as a kid, and wanted to be a "geologist on horseback" to be able to combine my two loves. I want this ride to go as smoothly as possible and anticipate your needs. Please understand our featured geologist is not a horseperson.
If there is anything you can anticipate as a need for this ride or future rides, please let me know so I can make this
as pleasurable as possible.
I am so looking forward to riding with each and every one of of you!

How many miles do you think the trip will cover? And, how many hours in the saddle.

Marie

The date has been set, it is Nov 2 and the weather is supposed to stay mild through the weekend

The price is $20 and we will meet behind the Abiquiu Elementary School. Bring horse water (at your truck)

a lunch, and enjoy the views.

Our Geologist, Kirt Kempter, is from the Santa Fe Community College and has been mapping the area for the

USGS and is very knowledgeable about the area. Copper Canyon's claim to fame is the largest fossil insect ever

discovered is from there. While they don't have the actual insect, they have the footprints. It was something

like a centipede, six feet long and 2 feet around! The are many fossils in the canyon, copper mines, (which we'll

visit) Petroglyphs, and ruins. I don't know if we'll be able to see everything as the canyon is big and I don't know

how spread out everything is.

I will try to supply everyone with a map and some background info on the canyon for the trip. We are already up

to 25 riders, including the geo. I would like to see this become an annual event since there appears to be so much interest.

Please let me know if you plan to attend. Please use my email address for RSVP:

Thanks, and hope to see you there!
