Joel,

I have had the ./configure missing problem as well. The solution was to
remove the source for said package from /var/spool/sorcery, as it's
probably corrupted, though the md5sum check should catch that. (My
problem was that my /var partition filled up, so the spell's source could
not be saved, so it was zero-length).

It is a good idea to not cast multiple spells at once unless you are sure
that both their dependencies are not the same or they are already
installed. If you want your cast to go faster you can try increasing the
number of make jobs (-j #) through the sorcery menu, under "Options".
This works best on SMP systems, but I generally set the number of make
jobs to 2 x # of CPUs on the system.

Your scrollbook error is an old one, and I thought it had been rememdied.
Please do the following, if you have the time: 'scribe update; cast -r -c
docbook-dtd docbook-xsl scrollkeeper'

If that doesn't fix it, please try: 'cast --fix'. This command will
check your system for any broken dependencies, spells with
missing/corrupted files, etc.

Hope this helps!

Thank you first of all for your kind responses and advice.
I have done a little more digging into this problem, and I found that casting
gedit on my work mahcine gives me the same situation as I described. I
should have mentioned that I did try deleting the downloaded sources before
casting to see what that would do, and was able to install gedit only by
unpacking the sources myself. I will be looking into the spell to see if I
can find the problem.
As for the docbook, I did forget to update my grimoire, so I did that as
well, then I tried what you suggested. Everything installed fine except for
scrollkeeper, which did not install because of the same error as before.
cast --fix did not seem to find anything wrong.
On the home machine I have a 4GB /var. I am thinking they may need a bigger
one than that after all, but presently only 60% is full after summoning most
of the spells in the grimoire and installing most of what I intend to use.
The work machine has a 15GB / which is roughly half full after similar usage,
and the home machine has about a 10GB / which is only 16% full. I am going
to be working on some guidelines for what a var partition should be in a
sourcemage system, since when I was installing there was not really any
except the admonition that there would be a cache there of sources, etc, and
there coudl be more data on partitioning, I think.
One of the reasons I am trying to summon all the spells is I am finding that
when I do
sorcery rebuild
I end up with a lot of spells dispelled and not installed. I think it is
because many of the spells do not get downloaded. I found the
download.sourcemage.org mirrors and though I have not yet read up enough on
sourcemage to know how to make spells look there when cast automatically, I
have been able to summon many spells I could not otherwise get so they could
be installed. I am hoping this will fix my sorcery rebuild problem (which
apparently other users have experienced, coming back after a rebuild to find
many basic commands no longer work...) so that I can rebuild what was
initially installed in binary form.
Anyway, back to the docbook/scrollkeeper problem... do you know what was done
to fix the problem? Also perhaps the fix was in test or devel because my
current default grimoire is stable... I have been wondering if I fix this and
compile it by hand if I will be able to get sourcemage to understand
scrollkeeper is there (I remember reading this is possible if I can FTFM then
RTFM :) ) but the most pressing problem in my mind is if I hack the test so
that it does not care about the docbook will I be screwing up something? Do
you remember how the fix worked or where I might search to find such a
discussion?

Thank you again for your time and patience.

Joel,

Searching through the sm-discuss archives, I found the old thread:
https://lists.ibiblio.org/sympa/arc/sm-discuss/2002-November/001805.html

It doesn't mention what the fix is, just that it has been fixed.

Also, here is the list of all bugs which mention scrollkeeper:
http://bugs.sourcemage.org/buglist.cgi?short_desc_type=allwordssubstr&short_desc=scrollkeeper&product=Codex&long_desc_type=allwordssubstr&long_desc=&bug_file_loc_type=allwordssubstr&bug_file_loc=&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=RESOLVED&bug_status=VERIFIED&bug_status=CLOSED&emailtype1=substring&email1=&emailtype2=substring&email2=&bugidtype=include&bug_id=&votes=&changedin=&chfieldfrom=&chfieldto=Now&chfieldvalue=&cmdtype=doit&newqueryname=&order=Reuse+same+sort+as+last+time&field0-0-0=noop&type0-0-0=noop&value0-0-0=

The first but (here: http://bugs.sourcemage.org/show_bug.cgi?id=180) has
a fix, which is to downgrade docbook. However, I do not think this will
help you (or rather, it may fix your problem, but you'll probably want to
upgrade sooner or later). Also, the docbook* and scrollkeeper spells are
the same across all grimoires at this time. I made sure to have this fix
all the way through. :)

As for gedit:

Are you wanting to use gnome or gnome2? If gnome2, you'll probably want
to cast gedit2 instead. Otherwise, I am not sure what the problem is, as
there are no bug reports with that problem for gedit.

Have you updated sorcery recently (latest stable is 1.0.2)?

Thank you very much for your assistance with this. So according to the
thread, it was fixed in the "perforce development" grimoire. Is this the same
as devel? I have noticed some inconsistency in the wiki docs as far as where
things are supposed to be, perhaps owing in part to the history of this
project. Currently I am pulling from http://codex.sourcemage.org/ and my
/etc/sorcery/local/grimoire is:
$ cat /etc/sorcery/local/grimoire
GRIMOIRE_DIR[0]=/var/lib/sorcery/codex/stable
GRIMOIRE_DIR[1]=/var/lib/sorcery/codex/test
GRIMOIRE_DIR[2]=/var/lib/sorcery/codex/devel

But I have found references to other grimoire locations, including (from the
Sorcery FAQ):
---
When I run sorcery update, it errors out saying it cant find the files?

You're probably still trying to access the old grimoire. Here's what you need
to do:
To use the grimoire as it stands now, edit
/var/lib/sorcery/grimoire/utils/sorcery/DETAILS
and change the SOURCE_URL[0] line to read

SOURCE_URL[0]=http://sgl.bccs.net/sorcery/$SOURCE

All fixed! Note that some people have mentioned that the path is not
/var/lib/sorcery/grimoire/utils/sorcery/ but
/var/lib/sorcery/grimoire/utils/sgl/ - so if you can't find the first one,
try the second one.

---

I looked in there and there is a grimoire and stuff there, but I have not
done a lot of digging to figure out what it is. For now I am just using the
grimoires that came with the system.

On to my problem. I was able to fix it, sort of, but it is not "really
fixed" yet. What I found is that in the original source for scrollkeeper the
offending line does not have a !, so it reads:
if xmlcatalog /etc/xml/catalog "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.1.2//EN" |
grep "No entry" >/dev/null ; then

Honestly the ! smelled funny to me in the first place. Anyway when I cast
the spell, the resultant configure file in /usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12 has:
if ! xmlcatalog /etc/xml/catalog "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML
V4.1.2//EN"
| grep "No entry" >/dev/null ; then

So somewhere the cast is inserting this ! which changes the test so that it
succeeds only if you do *not* have the proper DTD installed. I was able to
change this in the configure script, then do a
./configure && make && make install
and all was well, I was even able to cast gnome-terminal normally because
although it still needed scrollkeeper to be cast and recast it it still
compiled itself properly since scrollkeeper is really there (whereas it broke
before because scrollkeeper was neither cast nor there). I am still
interested in fixing this bug so I can cast scrollkeeper properly, and was
planning to learn to write spells so learning how cast works will be
beneficial anyway.

Just to make sure I am not being insane, I did the following:
$ cd /home/rifter/iftest
$ echo raar > raar
$ cat raar
raar
$ if cat raar | grep raar
> then
> echo true
> else
> echo false
> fi
raar
true
$ if cat raar | grep notthere
> then
> echo true
> else
> echo false
> fi
false
$

I think this bug is a result of the infamous "Why the hell doesn't bash
handle returns and true/fale like c?" problem, which has bitten many a
developer ;).

I will read up on the bugs as well as do my homework on how this wonderful
system works, and again thank you very much for your help and time in making
this system better. I still say it is superior to any previous Linux
Distribution I have tried, and it is my new favorite.

I started using Source Mage on the weekend and am loving it. Great
job everyone who made this possible.

Previously I have been using Debian, which I also love, but the
elegance of the source based concept caught my eye, and I had been
running into dependency problems in Debian, where I could not update
a needed package because I had the wrong binaries. This of course
lead to my downloading the package and all its dependencies sources
and doing the configure, make, make install dance. So it seemed a
good time to switch as I had figured out what I wanted on my system
and it seemed like a good time to strip the system down.

The other nice thing I am finding is that this system is much more
approachable, so I have already been adjusting the codex entries where
they have not been quite right, so when there is a failure, there is a
hope that I can do something about it.

Well, just wanted to say hello and thanks to all those who obviously
put a lot of work into making this distribution so smooth, and I hope
to start contributing spells very soon (I have a list).:)

I tried installing lynx and it failed. I am not concerned as I am
using links and it is working well with mutt (my main use of a text
based browser), but I was wondering if anyone has run into this
problem.

Thanks,

So I have to say I am very happy too, I haven't expected, that source
distribution can be so friendly, and I am really amazed by that speed.

Thanks all of you people in devel. teams. Good work so far.

Bye.
